Cinema and Media in the Anthropocene: Critical Thinking & Multimedia Creation

Cinema and Media in the Anthropocene: Critical Thinking and Multimedia Creation

COURSE INTRO

Course Introduction 01

COURSE INTRO

Course Introduction 01

From philosophical inquiries and artistic productions to popular cultures and everyday discourses, the concepts of the Anthropocene and the posthuman have become critical keywords in contemporary debates, frequently invoked by theorists, historians, artists, and activists to articulate the historical condition of our present and to interrogate the ontological/epistemological status of the human in the face of ecological threats and digital media environment. These discourses often call into question a range of binary oppositions once taken for granted across disciplines and historical periods: nature/culture, interiority/exteriority, subject/object, the biological/the technological, the organic/the inorganic, to name just a few. How might we rethink the theories and histories of cinema and media within the framework of the Anthropocene and the posthuman? How do different cinematic and media forms visualize, mediate, and affectively engage with the concepts of life, ecology, and nonhuman others? In what ways do different historical and cultural contexts shape audiovisual representations of environment and technology? How can cinema and media be mobilized to think through topics such as the cyborg, artificial intelligence, environmental crisis, infrastructure, and catastrophe? What would it mean to explore an eco-aesthetic of cinema? Beyond theoretical critique, how can creative media practices serve as conduits for reflecting upon these concerns? The summer session “FusionX: Cinema and Media in the Anthropocene: Critical Thinking & Multimedia Creation” begins with theoretical frameworks of the Anthropocene and posthumanism, examining how these perspectives reshape our analytical approaches to film and media. We then explore how diverse cinematic and media practices across historical periods and cultural contexts have engaged with issues of life and environment. Through screenings and discussions of works across geographies and periods—including early cinema, Weimar cinema, interwar European scientific film, American experimental cinema, global science fiction, French New Wave documentary, Japanese anime, contemporary Chinese auteur cinema, eco-documentary, and new media art—we investigate how different media forms render distinct, yet resonant, articulations of ecological and technological concerns. Cinema, in this context, becomes a prism through which to explore topics such as analog and digital technologies, climate change, infrastructure, and environmental justice.

"What XA has brought to me, the improvement of CS literacy goes without saying, but what I am more grateful for is being able to meet the top and most outstanding peers of my age. I have seen living MIT, CIT students, consulted TAs who can do nothing but debug, and also gained a bunch of board game friends. Perhaps saying that my dream is to change the world will be laughed at by people, but XA has given me the confidence to turn my dreams into reality."

This road is long, and the places to go are filled with poetry and ideals. The tears and sweat left behind yesterday make me more tenacious and courageous now. This is what XA has taught me: we can always be a little braver."
